“Small Time Retail Queens”

Small time retail queens
In velvet blazers, matching scarves
The pearl on her necklace
Is the same on her bracelet
And her antique earrings too

They fuss and scream and smile
Paperwork is their heavy lifting
Pens and keyboards are their swords
Dotted animal handbags their currency
And who has the best shoes now?

Phones ringing from dime-store husbands
The fireman in the wooden frame
Is a prisoner but a rich one
He buys her a foot in the door
And she pays him to be silent

Retail queens have vertical vision
Fingers lusting for your paycheck
They’ll always smell better, look better
But keep on your feet
They have goals, planograms and deadlines

Come hurricane, hell and high water
Full steam ahead, Captain
They’ll sink the Titanic again
Cue violins, Prada bags and Liz Claiborne
At least they’ll smile as you go down
